Lab Tests, COAs, and Keeping It Fresh

"Lab tested" is the most abused phrase in hemp. Here's what real testing looks like, how to read a report in ninety seconds, and how to store your stuff so the lab numbers still mean something a month after you buy it.

What a COA actually is

A COA, or certificate of analysis, is a report from an independent laboratory that says what's in the product. Not the manufacturer's marketing department. A third party with instruments and no stake in the answer. Every Sloss Sauce batch gets one before it sells, and every package carries a QR code straight to it.

What a full panel covers

• Cannabinoid potency. How much THCA, THC, CBD, and the rest. This is where you confirm the label matches the jar.
• Pesticides. Hemp pulls up what's in the soil and what's sprayed on it. The panel checks for both.
• Residual solvents. Extraction uses solvents; finished product shouldn't. The test verifies the purge worked.
• Heavy metals. Lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury. You want "ND", meaning not detected.
• Microbials. Mold, yeast, and bacteria screening.

How to read one in ninety seconds

• Match the batch. The batch or lot number on the report should match the package in your hand. A report for some other batch proves nothing.
• Check the date. Recent, and after the product was made.
• Find the lab. A named, independent lab with contact info. If the "lab" is the brand itself, that's not a COA, it's a press release.
• Scan the contaminant rows. You're looking for "pass" or "ND" down the line.
• Gut-check the potency. If a number looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Storage: don't cook your terps twice

Heat, light, and air are what degrade carts and concentrates. The fix is boring and it works:

• Carts: upright, room temperature, out of the sun. A hot car dashboard will thin the oil and mute the flavor.
• Badder: sealed jar, cool dark drawer. For long holds the fridge is fine; let the sealed jar come back to room temperature before opening so moisture doesn't condense inside.
• Both: away from kids and pets, always. A locked box is cheap.
